According to Agyepong, while Dr. Bawumia recognises the difficulties with the country’s exchange rate, his economic contributions in other areas should not be overlooked.
According to MyNewsGH, Agyepong made these remarks in response to criticisms of Bawumia’s previous promise to “arrest” the cedi’s depreciation, a pledge that has come under scrutiny due to the persistent challenges facing the currency.
He acknowledged that managing the exchange rate has proven to be more complicated than initially expected but argued that such challenges are not unique to Ghana.
He also pointed out that global factors, including fluctuations in international markets, have compounded the issue.
Despite these setbacks, Agyepong maintains that Dr. Bawumia remains committed to stabilising the economy.
He stressed that the focus should not be solely on the exchange rate but on the broader economic achievements of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under Bawumia’s stewardship.
Agyepong noted that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as head of the Economic Management Team has seen several initiatives aimed at improving the country’s infrastructure, technological advancement, and digitalisation efforts.
These initiatives, according to him, are laying the foundation for long-term economic stability, even if immediate results in areas like exchange rates are not yet fully realised.
Agyepong also highlighted the significance of the NPP’s broader economic strategy, which he believes has led to improvements in other sectors, such as agriculture, education, and industry.
He argued that these efforts have provided the necessary tools for Ghana to build a resilient economy capable of withstanding future shocks.
Addressing concerns ahead of the 2024 elections, Agyepong expressed confidence that the NPP’s message resonates with the Ghanaian populace.
He stated that the party is focused on winning the upcoming election by emphasising their overall economic performance and future plans.
He believes the electorate understands the complexities of the global economic environment and appreciates the NPP’s efforts to mitigate its impact on Ghana.
Kwabena Agyepong said, “It is important, but there are many things that we have done much better, so we are carrying our message to the people, and it is resonating with the people.
Yes, we accept the difficulty of the exchange rate regime; we accept that, but he (Bawumia) doesn’t need to apologise.
“The fact that you are not able to attain certain things doesn’t mean you should apologise.”
