The inaugural ceremony of the Agave Traditional Council on Wednesday 9th October 2024 was the talk of town after so many years of fighting for this course.
The ceremony marked a recognition that elevates the local enclave from traditional area to traditional council giving the chief authority and more power in the affairs of the communities under their watch. The traditional area has the largest number of clans (16) in South Tongu District.
Speaking at the event, the chairman of the occasion, Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome expressed his gratitude to all stakeholders. He further sent a stern warning to anyone who intends to cause problems in the near future. “This should have happened 75 years ago. Agave is a matured state. 1953 is when the Council’s building was built. Work began in 1945 but there was a little challenge and that challenge was what delayed this establishment leaving us behind others in this district” said Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome.
After his remarks, the member of parliament for South Tongu constituency, Hon. Kobena Mensah Woyome laid emphasis on the impacts of the chiefs in the development of the catchment area.
“It has been our dream to establish a Traditional Council and today it has been fulfilled. I pray us to move in one spirit, with one mind for us to be able to propel the development of the Agave state. Today should be the beginning to the end of all litigation. This rebirth will bring to us a lot of development”.
The ceremony was hosted by the paramount chief of the council , Torgbuiga Xedihor Hlitabo IV with support from over 10 sub-chiefs.
ABOUT AGAVE
The Agave people are specialised in riverine and wetland activity. They share the same culture with the Ewes of Togo and Dahomey. Agave-Afedome which is located on an island has served as the spiritual and the ancestral home of the people of Agave. Sogakofe is one of the main commercial towns of the Agave people.
Dabala which is about 35 kilometers from Sogakofe serves as the traditional head of the Kingdom of Agave. The Overlord of Agave lives in Dabala. The original land space of the Agave People spans from their current settlements sharing boundaries with Avenors all the way to Ningo including the Songor Lagoon.
That explains why there are multiplicity of tribes in Ada-Foah today. One of the most popular festival of the Agave is Dzawuwu Festival which is held annually in February. It’s a festival of cleansing.
