A team of three students from Ho Technical University (HTU) has won a cash prize of $20,000 in the KIC AgriTech Challenge – PRO. The students, who formed the business “DEECOM Nutrifoods Ltd.” developed a product called “Soysages,” an alternative protein made from soyabeans.
The team, consisting of Desmond Ntim Anokye, Esther Akpalu, and Evelyn Yankson, emerged victorious as one of the funded teams in the PRO Competition, out of 34 teams from nine universities across the country. Two other teams from the HTU ecosystem, Husk Pack Ghana Ltd and Hyfebee, also participated in the competition.
On Monday, during a brief ceremony to present their prizes to the University Management, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ben Honyenuga, commended the teams for their achievements and encouraged them to nurture their ideas and harness their skills to achieve success.
Ms. Mawunyo Aziave, Programme Officer, KIC Volta Region, noted that the competition provided business training and coaching to the students. Dr. Daniel Agbeko, Faculty Advisor, said the students’ achievement will motivate others to enrol in the next cohort of the programme.
The winners, who are excited about the grooming they received under the programme, plan to use their prize money to further develop their product and business.
