Police in Homa Bay County is investigating a bizarre incident where a man is said to have died after stealing money from a funeral.
33-year-old Geoffrey Odhiambo Onoka reportedly died on Wednesday morning after stealing Shs 56, 000 that had been contributed at a funeral on Friday last week.
The incident happened in Kakola Village in Rachounyo East sub-county, where the deceased reportedly colluded with a colleague and stole money meant for the burial of Peter Angira.
Upon realizing that some people had sneaked into the house and made away with the money, Peter’s family sought the help of a witch doctor in Siaya who cast a sickness spell on Onoka.
However, his co-thief remained well after returning his share of the stolen money, while Onoka went ahead to squander his portion.
When the sickness intensified, his family approached the bereaved family.
They were directed to the witchdoctor who demanded Ksh. 70, 000 to rescue Geoffrey, according to the Citizen Digital.
However, despite his assurances that the latter would not die after negotiating and receiving Ksh48, 000 from Onoka’s family, the suspect ended up dying on Wednesday.
In anger, Onoka’s kin carried his body to Peter Angira’s home as angry villagers burnt the home.
This resulted in a scuffle that saw one person injured.
Confirming the same, Rachuonyo East Deputy County Commissioner Jack Obuo noted that his officers have launched a probe into the matter.
