A Ghanaian man who lost his wife due to alleged negligence at Ridge Hospital in Accra has won a court case against the hospital and been awarded Ghc 3m in damages.
Mohammed Mustapha lost his wife, Akua Nyarko Osei-Bonsu, in 2019 when she was supposed to deliver at the hospital.
She was expected to undergo a caesarean section (CS) but in the aftermath of the surgery, she developed a condition called thromboembolism which led to the deaths of both her and her baby.
According to Mustapha, his wife was diagnosed by the hospital as being at risk and thus he was asked to buy some drugs which he did, but the drugs were never administered to her.
His legal team successfully argued in court that this failure by the hospital led directly to his wife’s death.
The Accra High Court hearing the case therefore awarded the plaintiff damages of Ghc 3million cedis.
