Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to reduce the high cost of electricity if elected in the upcoming elections, criticizing the current rates under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the financial burden that the current electricity tariffs place on Ghanaians and outlined his plan to address the issue.
“The cost of electricity is very high under the NPP government, and it is a significant strain on households and businesses. If I am elected, I shall reduce the cost of electricity to make life easier for all Ghanaians,” Dr. Bawumia declared to a cheering crowd.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of affordable electricity in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens. He emphasized that lower electricity costs would not only relieve financial pressure on families but also support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are crucial for job creation and economic development.
“Affordable electricity is essential for our economy. It lowers production costs for businesses, making them more competitive and able to create more jobs. We need to ensure that every Ghanaian can afford this basic necessity,” he stated.
The Vice President proposed several strategies to achieve this goal, including increasing investment in renewable energy sources, enhancing the efficiency of the electricity distribution network, and renegotiating power purchase agreements to secure more favorable terms for the country.
“We will invest in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects to diversify our energy mix and reduce dependency on expensive thermal power. Additionally, improving the efficiency of our distribution network will cut down on losses and ensure that savings are passed on to consumers,” he explained.
Dr. Bawumia’s pledge comes amid growing public concern over rising utility costs, which many argue are exacerbating the economic challenges faced by ordinary Ghanaians. Critics of the current administration have pointed to the need for more sustainable and affordable energy solutions.
