Director of Local Government Services at the Office of the President, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has slammed the various public sector unions in the country over the way they conduct themselves, particularly when it involves their members.
Dennis Miracles, joining Friday’s panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, scolded the unions saying they a contributory factor to Ghana’s economic mess.He raised concerns over how when a member of these unions commit a wrongdoing and instead of being punished, the unions would rather step in to shield the person and defend his or her misconduct.
Dennis Miracles, speaking in relation to the cedi depreciation and the causes of it, took a swipe at the unions stressing they are a major part of Ghana’s problems.
“Whether it is the politicization of the dollar…it is the politicization of everything that we do to point that even today, public servants are no longer accountable to the people and you can’t even talk about them.
You can’t touch them because they have unionized it, so you find a problem for yourself when you talk about it.
It’s something that if we don’t deal with now, it will bring us lots of problems.”To Dennis Miracles, it appears these unions are growing wings, stating “now, when somebody commits an offence, the only thing the person has to do is to join an association and once he belongs to an association, he has freedom.
He can do whatever he wants to do in this country and get away with it; you can’t talk about it.
Now, politicians are even afraid to even fix our own institutions because when you go and raise concerns about the institutions, you have the unions and the associations writing long press releases.
Why should I be afraid to talk about the fact that, today, there is a Police officer somewhere standing in front in a traffic light somewhere and harassing a citizen?”, he fumed.
