Former President John Dramani Mahama has wished all Ghanaians well on the occasion of the 62ndindependence anniversary.

“Let us continue to thank God for how far he has brought us, as a country,” he said in a short message on Wednesday as the country marks 62 years after independence.

“We are not where we should be, but we should be thankful for the many blessings that God has brought our way.”

Mr Mahama was president as Ghana marked its 56th to 59th anniversary.

The first was obviously marked by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, considered by many as the founder of Ghana.

“Our country’s Founder, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, deserves on this day to be celebrated not denigrated for his tireless leadership that brought us independence 62 years ago,” Mr Mahama’s statement said.

Already, the Founder’s Day celebration introduced by Mr Mahama’s predecessor, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has been scrapped and is rather to be celebrated as Founders’ Day on August 4 each year.

September 21 will, nevertheless, be marked as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.
